Madeira's diving isn't one place.
It's four different areas.
Pick the area that matches your certification level and your appetite for currents - or start at Garajau (the obvious first stop) and work outward.
01
Madeira's protected reserve since 1986
Garajau Marine Reserve
Habituated dusky groupers, three signature sites (T-Reef / Morays Wall / Baixa da Cruz). Visibility holds year-round. Beginner-to-advanced friendly - the obvious first stop.

East coast wreck country
Caniçal
The Corveta Afonso Cerqueira (sunk 2018) is the headliner - a 70m corvette at 24–30m with engineered penetration routes. Plus the Bowbelle wreck. AOW recommended.
20–30m · AOW preferred · 2 wrecks
Honest call
“The Corveta lives here”

The clearer sister island
Porto Santo
40m+ viz days are routine here. The Madeirense wreck dive is exceptional. But you commit to a 2.5h ferry plus overnight or a long day trip - only worth it on a multi-day Madeira diving holiday.
15–35m · OW+ · ferry-day required
Honest call
“Best visibility. Worst commute.”

Open Atlantic, exposed coast
Ponta de São Lourenço
Drift dives with pelagic encounters in open water. Strong currents, weather-dependent access. PADI AOW minimum + 50+ logged dives. Not for the first holiday week.
